Amazon’s $10 Referral-Fee Threshold: Eligible Categories and Price Math

The US Amazon 8% rate at $10 is category-specific. Compare eligible fee bands, shipping-inclusive totals and contribution near the threshold.

First verify whether the threshold belongs to your product

The rate comparison is useful only after you identify the actual fee category. Do not take a kitchen gadget priced at $9.99 and assign it the Baby Products schedule. The following worked examples assume an eligible product with an 8% whole-price rate through $10 and 15% above $10, no separate shipping charge, and a fee above the $0.30 minimum.

Moving from $10 to $10.01 loses $0.69 in referral-only proceeds. Moving to $11.99 gains $0.99. The presence of a fee threshold does not mean the lower price always produces more dollars.

Find the recovery price algebraically

Ignoring cent rounding, $10 at 8% leaves $10 × 0.92 = $9.20. A price above the threshold leaves price × 0.85. Equating the two:

Price = $9.20 ÷ 0.85 = $10.8235...

Approximately $10.83 restores those referral-only proceeds. If fulfillment costs also change at the new price, include that change before solving. The referral calculator is not evidence that fulfillment will stay constant.

Buyer shipping can move an item across the boundary

An illustrative eligible item advertised at $9 with $2 shipping has an $11 total. The applicable fee is $11 × 15% = $1.65. Calculating $9 × 8% = $0.72 would understate the referral fee by $0.93.

Changing the display to $11 with free shipping leaves that same total and referral fee. Actually lowering the total to $10 changes revenue as well as the fee. Compare the resulting contribution after postage, not the advertised item price alone.

Decide using contribution and achievable volume

Assume, illustratively, that all non-referral variable costs are $6 per sale at either price. At $10, contribution is $3.20; at $11.99, using a rounded $1.80 fee, it is $4.19.

If the $10 price produces 500 sales, total contribution is $1,600. The $11.99 price needs $1,600 ÷ $4.19 = 381.86, or 382 sales, to match it under these assumptions. At 400 sales it produces $1,676. At 350 sales it produces $1,466.50.

This gives you a concrete volume target to compare with a pricing test. It does not supply a universal conversion uplift or tell you how long a low-volume test must run. Watch for stockouts, promotions and seasonal demand that make the two periods incomparable.

Check very low prices separately

In these categories, a $2 total would produce $0.16 at 8%, so the $0.30 minimum controls. The resulting 15% effective referral rate comes from the minimum, not a different category percentage. Selling-plan and fulfillment charges can still make an apparently cheap referral fee expensive overall.

Does every Amazon item priced at $10 or less pay 8%?

No. The US schedule uses this threshold for Baby Products and Beauty, Health, and Personal Care. Home and Kitchen and Toys and Games remain 15% at these prices.

Does shipping count toward the $10 threshold?

Yes. Use the product’s total sales price, including buyer-paid shipping and gift wrapping. A $9 item plus $2 shipping has an $11 fee base.

How far above $10 must I price to restore referral-only proceeds?

For an eligible 8%/15% category, $10 leaves $9.20 before other costs. Solving 0.85 × price = $9.20 gives about $10.83. Fulfillment and demand can change the decision.
