Etsy Fees on Shipping and Gift Wrap: Calculate What You Keep

Calculate the order total before the fee

Shipping charged and gift wrap are part of Etsy's 6.5% transaction-fee base. US Etsy Payments processing is 3% plus $0.25 and includes tax in its base, unlike the US transaction fee. Other countries have different processing and tax treatment. Etsy fee policy, payment-processing rates.

For the no-tax worked example, both percentage calculations use $38:

The processing calculation is $1.14 plus $0.25. Adding another $0.25 would count its fixed component twice. The effective fee is $4.06 ÷ $38, or 10.68% in this example.

Turn the remainder into an order contribution

Suppose this illustrative order also uses $8 of product materials, $4.50 postage, $0.75 ordinary packaging and $2.50 of gift-wrap materials and labor.

The order contribution is:

$38 − $4.06 − $8 − $4.50 − $0.75 − $2.50 = $18.19.

That amount still needs to cover any production labor not already counted, overhead and income taxes. It is not a guaranteed bank deposit: an account can also contain other listing charges, labels, refunds and balances.

Keep the shipping receipt separate from the shipping charge on the order. A $5 buyer charge does not prove that your label cost $5, and it does not mean you retained all $5.

Price gift wrap from its incremental cost

In this no-tax, no-ad example, an extra dollar of wrap revenue retains about $0.905 after percentage fees. The existing order already has its fixed processing charge; adding wrap does not create a second payment.

A $3 wrap charge therefore contributes approximately:

$3 × 0.905 − $2.50 = $0.215, or about $0.22.

Order-level rounding can move that incremental amount by a cent. If you want $1 contribution after the same $2.50 wrap cost, calculate:

Required wrap charge = ($2.50 + $1) ÷ 0.905 = $3.87, rounded up.

This gives you a price based on your time and supplies. A blanket markup such as 30% can be too low or unnecessarily high. If the order attracts an ad fee, replace 0.905 with the retention rate that includes that fee, subject to any cap.

Compare free shipping on equal totals

A $30 item plus $5 shipping and a $35 item with free shipping both collect $35 before tax. Under the same fee assumptions, each incurs $3.78 in standard fees, using separately rounded fee lines. Both sellers must still pay postage.

Keeping the item at $30 while removing the $5 shipping charge is a price reduction. It lowers the fee but also lowers revenue. Evaluate that change against actual order contribution and buyer response, not the fee alone.
