Payment Processors for Marketplace Sellers Adding a Direct Channel

Separate marketplace checkout from independent direct sales, then compare processor products and full channel costs without double-counting.

Draw the checkout boundary

For normal Etsy online sales, the transaction fee and Etsy Payments processing appear separately. eBay's normal managed-payments final-value fee includes processing. You do not improve those ordinary marketplace orders by adding a hypothetical Stripe, PayPal or Square rate to the calculation. Etsy fee terms, eBay selling fees.

A separate website can have its own subscription, transaction charges and payment processing. For example, Shopify's third-party-provider guidance says transaction fees can apply in addition to provider processing; availability and arrangements vary. Do not assume any named processor is available on every platform or plan. Shopify third-party payments.

This article's direct-channel examples concern independently acquired orders. Etsy prohibits moving Etsy-initiated transactions off its platform, and eBay restricts off-platform offers. A payment link is not a fee-saving substitute for a marketplace checkout already in progress. Etsy off-platform terms, eBay off-platform policy.

Choose the product before comparing its rate

For US domestic USD transactions, the following are distinct published examples:

Payment product or channel Published processing example
Stripe standard domestic cards 2.9% + $0.30
PayPal Checkout 3.49% + $0.49
PayPal Standard Credit and Debit Card Payments 2.99% + $0.49
Square Free online or invoice card payments 3.3% + $0.30
Square Online API 2.9% + $0.30

Sources: Stripe pricing, PayPal US merchant fees, Square plans and channel rates.

These rows exclude extra product fees, international cards, conversion, disputes, refunds and negotiated arrangements. Square's paid plans and other channels differ. PayPal's Send/Receive Money for Goods and Services row is not the same product as Checkout or Standard Card Payments. A brand name alone cannot identify the rate.

Worked example: a $40 independent direct order

Assume a US domestic card transaction charged through Stripe standard pricing, without paid add-ons. Processing is $40 × 2.9% + $0.30 = $1.46.

For a separate illustrative marketplace scenario, suppose your actual statement shows an average $4.25 fee cost per comparable $40 order. This is a supplied comparison input, not a marketplace-wide published rate.

The maximum per-order fee headroom for the direct channel is $4.25 − $1.46 = $2.79 before any direct-channel overhead or acquisition cost.

Now assume $60 monthly direct-site overhead and 100 comparable orders:

Monthly cost Marketplace scenario Direct scenario
Order/payment fees $425 $146
Direct-site overhead $0 in this comparison $60
Total before acquisition $425 $206

The direct channel has $219 of monthly headroom, or $2.19 per order, before its cost exceeds this fee-only marketplace scenario. If acquiring those 100 direct orders costs $250, the direct total becomes $456, which is $31 higher.

Equal order count, order value and fulfillment costs are assumptions. Existing marketplace demand will not automatically follow to the independent store.

Include costs that follow the new channel

Budget for the services you will actually use: store hosting, apps, email, advertising, support and maintenance. Allocate setup costs over a chosen planning period, but keep the original cash outlay visible. Compare contribution after these costs and any differences in fulfillment, refunds or discounts.

If offering a second payment method changes conversion, measure contribution from completed orders. Do not assume an age group prefers a processor or that a published trust claim creates a specific conversion lift.

Use the processor comparison only when its preset matches the product you intend to use. The processor fee guide provides a separate product-level calculation and monthly-volume example.

FAQ

Can I replace Etsy Payments with Stripe to lower an Etsy sale’s fee?

No. Normal marketplace checkout follows the marketplace’s payment arrangements. This comparison is for a separate direct channel serving independently acquired orders.

Do I add a processor fee to all marketplace fees?

No. Etsy lists transaction and Etsy Payments processing separately; eBay’s normal managed-payments final-value fee includes processing. A direct website can instead have its own platform and processor charges.

Which processor is cheapest for a direct store?

There is no universal brand-level answer. Compare the exact payment product, channel, country, plan, subscription, order mix and any additional fees. PayPal and Square each publish multiple rates.
